Thoughts on Cream Highlighters

Friday, July 20, 2018

Truthfully, I’m not usually the cream highlighter kind of gal. Cream highlighters usually leave a more subtle, healthy glow and I go more for that glowing goddess kind of glow that you admire from afar. But I don’t mean that obnoxious beam of light that still blinds me on Instagram makeup artists (*insert air quotes here*). Even though creams aren’t my first pick for a highlighter, I still own some!

Prepare yourself to read the words 'glow' and 'light' fifty times.

Glossier Haloscope in Quartz

Fun fact, I didn’t own anything from Glossier until this. Now, you just heard me above swear that I’m not a cream highlighter person but this was a gift, so naturally I had to try it out. It’s a dual highlight stick that’s infused with genuine crystal extracts on the outer band and vitamin enriched moisturizers on the inside. Alriiiiight Glossier, go ahead. They put the good stuff in this little glow stick which leaves my skin with a dew-like finish that’s all glow, no glitter. I really enjoy this when I apply it with my fingers (very important) and tap it along my cheekbone. Glossier is very no fuss application so that’s what makes Haloscope so easy. The subtle, healthy glow is great for those low maintenance days.

CLE Essence Moonlighter Cushion

When this arrived in my Allure beauty box one month, I honestly wasn’t sure I was going to use it. But something made me break it open, marvel at the tiny sponge applicator within and then pat it into the cushion inside. The result? Soft glowing beacons I call my cheekbones. This highlighter is like a cushion compact of glow, ready to be applied whenever and wherever. I imagine my cheekbones mimic the glow that comes off a sunset. It’s super smooth upon application and leaves a more enhanced but subtle glow than Haloscope. CLE is higher on glow where Haloscope is more dewy.

Milk Makeup Stick in Mars

Even though most cream highlighters come in sticks, Milk kept to their innovative brand with their highlighters in stick form. Straight off, they’re a bit harder to work with because I think the texture is harder. They’re not as creamy or flexible as the above highlighters. I still recommend the fingers for these because once they do work, they’ll leave a glowy, even holographic finish, on any complexion. Bonus: They’re the best cream highlighter out of the three to be used all over the face!

Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter in 3 Light/Medium

Hold onto your hats here, or your phone, whatever’s nearby. At last, this rose gold bottle of heaven is in my hands and it’s all mine. Charlotte Tilbury truly made this doe foot applicator highlighter into a multi-functional product that leaves my skin glowing for HOURS. Seriously the love for the glow this gives is immeasurable.

I dab this on with the applicator and then blend in with my Real Techniques Complexion Sponge. I like the texture more than most cream highlighters because it’s more substantial than liquid highlighters how can feel. Not only can it go on the cheekbones, but Flawless Filter can also go under foundation as a primer, mixed with foundation, or worn alone for that ‘yes I glow like this all the time.’ That’s probably the reason for the consistency. It’s so fab y’all, you have no idea. I swear you need this. It’s going to be my next must have item from Charlotte Tilbury when people ask (first is Filmstar Bronze & Glow, second is Pillowtalk lipstick).

*Tip: It only comes in 7 shades because it’s not an actual foundation. When picking a shade, decide whether you want it to be a highlight shade, where you go a shade lighter than your foundation or a foundation enhancer, where you would pick what’s closest to your foundation at the moment.

Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Beauty Light Wand

Okay, straight up, Charlotte Tilbury does cream highlighters in the best way. They’re so amazing that I would toss out any of the other ones I mentioned and keep the Charlotte Tilbury ones FOREVER. This wand was one of Charlotte Tilbury's products that I've been dying to try.

Basically, this has a sponge applicator at the top and you squeeze out a bit (literally, because a little goes a long way). Then you just dot the sponge along your cheekbone...down the bridge of the nose...cupid’s bow...everywhere really. Which is exactly what I did upon my first application. I just went for it and holy moly, this was some serious glow. Like, I sat back and went ‘Damn.’ This was one of the wisest and best purchases I made in terms of highlighters and items from Charlotte Tilbury. Buy this if you love a cream highlighter, love Charlotte Tilbury, or just love to radiate light all day.

If you’re wanting to start highlighting and playing up the features God gave you, cream highlighters are a great beginners step so you don’t end up feeling overwhelmed and bearing a resemblance to a light bulb. They come in sticks, yes, and also pots and liquids! Explore and play to figure out what’s best for you!
