Autumnal Reds

Friday, September 23, 2016

I can't get too excited about autumn in Charleston when the temperature is still 80 around here. I'll just be festive on the inside and watch Hocus Pocus on repeat. Thankfully autumn makeup is more doable than me stepping out in a sweater and boots without dying of heatstroke. This fall, red is having its moment in makeup collections everywhere. At first, I was a little cautious about red eyeshadow most of all since I've never seen it on anyone before, but honestly Chanel has done it best with their new eyeshadow quad for fall. They have other pieces featuring beautiful shades of red but these eyeshadows spoke to me the most. Enough for me to finally break down and add this gem to my collection.

The red shade in this quad is warm enough that when I blend it with the other brown shades, I get this warm smokey eye that really makes my brown eyes pop. I loved the finished look so much that pairing my black eyeliner with it almost took away from the intensity of the red eyeshadow. It's almost like a terra-cotta red that could carry over into other seasons since it's so warm.

I was really impressed with the three brown shadows in this quad also. I tried so hard to convince myself that I had shades similar to this, which I probably do, but they were different enough for me to not feel guilty about them. The darkest brown, which is next to the red, is perfect in the outer corner or in the crease to add to the definition of the look and intensify the shadows. In the top row, I like to put the butterscotch-esque shade all over my lid and then layer the lighter brown one over that to give me a good base before I add the darker brown and finish with the red. They could work brilliantly without the red too, they're that warm of mattes.

Speaking of mattes, yes, this quad is matte. I'm getting more into matte I think and it's something I want to pursue as the months go on, even though I'll always love a good shimmery eyeshadow. Chanel really hit the nail on the head with these matte shadows because they're powdery and pigmented without feeling dry and patchy. They truly blend smoothly and the color pay off is worth every penny.

This has become one of my most coveted items in my collection, all because of the red shadow in the quad. If you're looking for a warm, autumnal matte collection of shadows, then try and get your hands on this quad before it's too late. But at least by that time it'll be Christmas and I'll be singing like no tomorrow.
