Christmas Crash Course

Monday, December 11, 2017

Hopefully you're in the full festive swing of Christmas by now. If not, I'm here to help. The Clark Griswold of 2017 if you will.

Recently, I had a close friend seek out my (festive) help to find her Christmas spirit again. I am known among many as that person who is ready to pull out the Christmas lights, put on Elf, and get my Starbucks holiday drink on November 1st. Christmas is my absolute favorite time of year, behind August which is my birthday month. The warmth and happiness that Christmas lights strung on the porch and around the tree set the ultimate Christmas mood. I live for the endless baking of delicious cookies, giving them out, and even eating a few myself. It's Christmas around the clock as soon as it's (somewhat) acceptable for me. Let's get cracking on how to achieve that glorious, maximum spirit.

The best (and easiest) way to launch yourself into the Christmas spirit is to start with a movie. Pick any festive movie, preferably with a reindeer, snow, and Santa Claus. I've just given you a lot to work with here. Movies are endless and so easy to enjoy at any time. I always pop one on during the month of December when I'm baking, wrapping presents, or even doing homework (idk some people do have homework out there before winter break).

Christmas Movies that make Hannah's List of Ultimate Christmas Films (pretentious uppercase needed):

  • Elf
  • Home Alone (1&2)
  • The Santa Clause (1&2)
  • White Christmas
  • National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
Movies that aren’t really about Christmas but have Christmas in them so they earn a place:

  • The Holiday
  • While You Were Sleeping (a true Sandra Bullock classic if you’re unfamiliar)
  • Harry Potter (FreeForm practically begged me to put this on here)

Now that you're set for a few hours (more like days) with Christmas films as your background noise for most of December, let's move onto another one of my favorite parts of the beautiful holiday season: Christmas music.

There is one Christmas song I keep in my immediate Spotify library year round and sometimes I let it play in the middle of April or July because my Christmas spirit never truly hibernates after December 25th. That song is “Merry Christmas Everyone” by Shakin' Stevens. It's not well known over here in America as far as I know, but my favorite Youtuber (and fellow Christmas enthusiast) Zoella loves it too.

The real jam of the season is "All I Want for Christmas is You" by Mariah Carey. Just listen to those first few notes and Mariah's building entrance and suddenly you're dancing along in your car like me.

Head over to my Spotify playlist for the ultimate Christmas tunes I deemed worthy of a replay here

I guarantee these will put you in the festive, Christmas mood by the time the first song is over and suddenly you'll want to put on a Christmas sweater, eat eight sugar cookies, and wrap all 20 presents you were putting off. You're halfway there my friend!

Now that you've conquered the entertainment side of Christmas, we need to tackle the other part that makes Christmas so delicious....the food!! I'm going to save this for another post where I could round up my favorite things to bake at the holiday season and even one martini that makes an appearance once every December (mostly because it's too strong to show up any other time). Oh, I already can't wait to be up to my ears in Christmas cheer.

What’s your favorite Christmas movie?? Song? Festive thing that makes you feel like the Ultimate Embodiment of Christmas? I would love to know.
