Cleansing: My Favorite Step & Product to Buy

Friday, March 6, 2020

Welcome to my new favorite post about my favorite step of my skincare routine! Some don't enjoy washing their faces, some don't find cleansing all that exciting, and then there's me. I always have three cleansers on regular rotation...I tried to be casual and say a couple but it's three on average. I can't be stopped. Here's a wee novel starring some of my favorite cleansers ever.

Alex Steinherr said one day on her Instagram that she keeps several cleansers on rotation because her skin tends to need different things on a day to day basis. When I heard that, I found myself agreeing because it's true! If I stopped to think about it, I usually choose a certain cleanser morning and/or night because of a certain reason. It's rarely because of it being the first one my hand touches. Then I heard Kate Somerville, brand founder, say a similar point somewhere in this video

So you have two official people from the beauty industry and me, a mere blogger and Sephora employee, stressing the importance of having more than one cleanser (if you can swing it).

The first cleanser that started it all is the Kiehl's Calendula Deep Cleansing Foaming Face Wash. I don't really remember how I ended up trying this...it might have been from Emily Ratajkowski's Top Shelf or because I was already using Kiehl's??? Whatever the source, I fell in love with this cleanser because of how it smells, lathers SO NICELY, and my skin feels soft afterwards!! The standard size lasts forever so you should really only buy it once or twice a year. Look, I'm saving you money already.

I tried Glow Recipe's first Blueberry Bounce cleanser in 2017 (and even took it to London with me) so when they reformulated I resembled the shrugging girl emoji. I was fine with the original formula but the newer one promised to be even more deeply cleansing and better at removing makeup. I found the new one to be thicker and bouncier than the original but still a great cleanser!

Presently, I love how this lathers lightly and cleanses really well without leaving my face squeaky. It's gentle enough with the exfoliation that I can use it daily. Another plus is one pump is all you need so this one should also last you forever.

The most underrated of the cleansers, at least in my collection, is this one from Fresh. I feel a bit guilty when describing it as just a cleanser. That's all it does: cleanse. No fancy tricks and it doesn't even lather that much. It smells vaguely of a cross between plants and cucumbers which is oddly refreshing. I love using this in the morning, as a second cleanse at night, just whenever and wherever!

Cleansing will always be my favorite step in my routine. With so many options out there, there's no excuse to take off your makeup with a wipe (you know I had to put that in here). Some other superstars I've used and loved are Indie Lee Brightening Cleanser, Kylie Skin Instant Foaming Cleanser, and Caudalie Instant Foaming Cleanser. I'm off to wash my face now, k bye.
